China Refuses to Recycle Our Plastic, Now What?
For more than 25 years, many developed countries, including the U.S., have been sending plastic waste to China instead of recycling it themselves. But in 2017, China banned plastic waste from being imported beginning in January 2018.
Now that China won’t take it, what’s happening to our used plastic?
We can start by asking our local waste-management company, Rethink Waste. Join us for a tour of the Shoreway Environmental Center in San Carlos from 12:30 – 2:30pm on Wednesday, June 12.
We’ll visit the transfer station, materials recovery facility, and environmental education center. We’ll follow the path of recyclables, yard trimmings, food scraps, and garbage from curbside-collection, to processing, to remanufacturing or being sent to the landfill.
Directions: 333 Shoreway Road, San Carlos, CA 94070. Enter through Gate #2, park in the visitor’s parking lot following the Tour Parking sign. Gather at the “Tour Starts Here” sign.
Children in third-grade and up are welcome, too. Let me know if you plan to come so that I can send you the Tour Participant Permission form.
