Upward Scholars is a Redwood City-based organization that provides adult immigrants from low-income households the boost they need to move up the economic ladder through education and career development support.
Upward Scholars helps adult students overcome the financial and academic barriers that limit their success. We provide financial assistance to cover textbooks and transportation, laptops and food vouchers, and other kinds of support such as volunteer tutors and mentors. Tutors and English Conversation Partners (including a number of UU Fellowship folks) assist students with homework, English-speaking skills, and effective study habits.
Upward Scholars student success leads to success for everyone in our community! Educating adult immigrants is an investment in the human capital of our region and increases tax revenues, lowers social welfare payments, and brings about greater civic engagement.
UUFRC has many connections with Upward Scholars. Erika Pretell serves as the President of the Upward Scholars board of directors and Nancy Goodban is on the board of advisors. Many of you are tutors or have attended the “Conversation Club” (which is now virtual), and several work with “¡Habla Más!” Spanish coaches. For more information, visit UpwardScholars.org.
Donations can be made from the Friday before the service through the Tuesday following the service, using PayPal link https://www.uufrc.org/community/giving/ and writing “Share the Plate” in the memo line. On the Sunday of the collection, all donations, unless otherwise specified, go to Share the Plate.
