What to put in your compost bin. What to do with batteries.
- Food scraps, meat, poultry, fish, bones, fruit, vegetables
- Food and beverage soiled paper (such as pizza boxes and some takeout containers)
- Yard trimmings
- Utensils, plates, food containers labeled “Compostable”
Tape the terminals of lithium-ion and 9-volt batteries. Put the batteries in a plastic zip-top bag and zip the bag when it’s about 1/2 way full. Place the bag on the black garbage cart.
Batteries must be kept separate because most material recycled at this plant is paper and batteries can cause fires. One battery-fire shut the facility down for four months.
