UUFRC’s Interfaith Committee provides our congregation with a very important way to reach beyond our fellowship to engage with the larger community. Our committee fosters UUFRC’s involvement with congregations of other faiths primarily through our membership in the Peninsula Multifaith Coalition and participation in its activities.
Peninsula Multifaith is an organization of approximately 25 local religious organizations and congregations, including Jewish, Muslim, Christian, Buddhist and Hindu communities. Our UUFRC representative to the PMC attends monthly meetings, helps plan annual events such as the Martin Luther King Day of Service and the Multifaith Songfest, and promotes interfaith activities and events sponsored by individual PMC member communities.
In addition to our PMC membership, our committee also facilitates a monthly food sort for Second Harvest with members of the Yaseen Foundation, a Muslim community organization in Belmont. A group of UUFRC members have been faithfully volunteering for many months—but we can always use more willing arms and legs. The food sort occurs every fourth Saturday at 7:00 am. Please contact John Anning at email@example.com if you are interested in volunteering.
Finally, our committee explores other faith traditions through sponsoring interfaith services and forums. This spring (2018) Interfaith is sponsoring a multifaith forum on the environment on March 11 at noon. We are also coordinating an interfaith worship service on April 15. Please mark your calendars and watch the church bulletin and Yahoo list for more information about these upcoming events.
The Interfaith Committee meets quarterly, usually after Sunday worship service. Meetings are open to all, and all are encouraged to attend and join more of our activities. Our next meeting will be Sunday, March 18 at 11:45 am. Especially during this time of great division and polarization in our nation, building bridges across differences is crucial sacred work. The work of our new committee is one way our fellowship engages in the work of building beloved community beyond our walls.
This spring, as our committee marks its second year, is a critical time of transition. We need to elect new committee leadership in order to continue our involvement with PMC and our outreach to other faith communities. Please talk with Beth, Cheri, or Rev. Gretchen if you are interested in stepping up to the committee chair role. Whether as chair or committee member or supportive friend, we hope you will join us in our efforts! It’s not only important—it’s also FUN to make new friends and learn more about the vibrant religious diversity on the peninsula!
For more information about our committee and upcoming events, please contact Beth Harrison, Interfaith Committee Chair, at firstname.lastname@example.org or Cheri Hahne, UUFRC’s PMC representative, at email@example.com.
