Photos of Folk Crafts taken by Marianna Tubman
Get Involved / Committees / Partner Church :: 2005
Here are two pictures of a mat made from shelf fungus, dyed in much that way
that leather is. The texture is like soft suede. It's an unusual folk craft which shows the
connection of the people to the woods (the Sylvania of Transylvania). I believe it was made by
Unitarians, though not from our partner church.

These are some pictures of hand-painted plaques. The plaques were made by
Ibolya Pap, a Unitarian woman in SzekelyZsombor who has written UUFRC
a letter as part of the partner church letter exchange project. Her husband is a
woodcutter. The oval painting depicts the fortress hill in Zsombor, with a typical
Unitarian style church steeple visible (although the Unitarians in Zsombor no longer have a traditional "church" - they have something more like a meeting house.)
Most Unitarian villages in Transylvania have a church that looks like the one in the painting.

Here is a photo of Marianna Tubman at the Pentecost service (June 2003)
in the Homorodujfalu Unitarian church. The minister leading the service, Rev.Arpad
Ilkei, is also the minister for our partner church in Szekelyzsombor.
